Shoes and Pickleball
You don’t have to wear special shoes to play pickleball, but the right footwear makes a big difference in both performance and safety.
Here’s why:
Support & Stability: Pickleball involves quick side-to-side movements. Running or walking shoes are designed for forward motion and may not provide sufficient lateral support, which increases your risk of ankle injuries.
Court Grip: Court shoes (like tennis or volleyball shoes) have soles designed for grip on smooth surfaces, reducing slips.
Durability: Running shoes tend to wear down quickly on hard courts, whereas court shoes are designed to withstand that surface.
Comfort: Proper shoes reduce foot, knee, and hip strain, especially if you play often.
If you’re just trying the game casually, a comfortable pair of athletic shoes with good tread is fine. However, if you plan to play regularly, investing in a pair of court shoes specifically designed for pickleball or tennis is highly recommended.
