Pickleball courts are the hottest new amenity in hotels and residential backyards. IT SEEMED to spring from nowhere, and now the cutely named pickleball, invented in 1965 on Bainbridge Island, Washington, is part of Los Angeles sports and social culture.
“We saw how having pickleball courts within the community added incredible vibrance to the neighborhood,” says John M. Erickson, mayor of West Hollywood. “We have more than any other neighborhood, but we still don’t have enough space to keep up with demand.”
“It’s all the rage,” says Tracy Tutor, a realtor at Douglas Elliman and star of Bravo’s Million Dollar Listing Los Angeles. “We’ll be seeing pickleball in vertical living and branded residences more and more.”
Many institutions are converting tennis courts or creating pickleball/tennis flexible courts. After a multimillion-dollar renovation, the Los Angeles Athletic Club is pickleball-ready for club members and guests of its hotel floors.
