Pickleball courts open in Pocono Township

The game of pickleball is taking over Mountain View Park in Pocono Township.

"It's a very popular, fastest-growing sport in the US, and even on the professional level, is getting more popular," said Cheryl Bliss, East Stroudsburg.

"It's a great activity because you're outside, you can go to the gym and work out and all that, but this time of year it is just so nice," said Jeff Bliss, East Stroudsburg.

Township officials started construction last June on the three pickleball courts after seeing a dip in usage of the park's basketball courts.

Players say since then, they've been waiting to finally get out on the court.

"We play indoors at Northampton Community College, and to be able to play outside in this beautiful area, we have the mountains in the background, we enjoy playing here," said Cheryl.

Players like Cheryl tell Newswatch 16 they're excited to finally have a designated space to play some games of pickleball, "These are designated  pickleball courts unlike the ones we use over at Chipperfield, the school those are not designated, and we have to chalk the lines, and if it rains, we have to put more chalk down."

"They are very good, and the surface is wonderful. The nets are perfect, so you're not playing with tennis nets, you're playing with pickleball nets, so you can't get anything better; these courts are absolutely beautiful," said Bliss.
