A pickleball event in Halfmoon is bringing people together to raise money for breast cancer research and support. The second annual ‘Pinkleball’ event is happening at the Impact Athletic Center in Halfmoon. The event is part of the Men Wear Pink campaign and raises money for the American Cancer Society and Men Wear Pink.
The event raised more than $10,000 last year.
“It’s a dramatic difference in people when you talk to them about cancer,” said John Derbegosian.
“You bring up that conversation, it doesn’t matter if you don’t know them at all, that comes up, there’s a commonality,” Derbegosian said.
“And by having that conversation, bringing those things up, every year we notice more and more people, they get the word out. They get people to go get checked, get pre-screened, and that’s really what it’s about, is making sure you get out there, get pre-screened, because the earlier you get on it, the better chances you have.”
Derbegosian, owner at Camelot, has been part of Men Wear Pink for a number of years. Camelot, Performance Industrial, Print and Copy Centers and Impact Athletic Center helped make the event happen, along with NewsChannel 13.
“And every year, more and more people, more sponsors, more teams. Hopefully next year we can get to two groups of 16. We’ll see how it goes. But every year, it’s encouraging. Every event we do, including this one, where people just get excited that, hey, we’re doing it again. Great. We’re in,” said Derbegosian.
