Residents and visitors of Destin will soon have new outdoor activities to enjoy, thanks to a $50,000 grant from the Florida Recreation Development Assistance Program. The grant will build the city’s first pickleball courts dedicated solely to the sport.
The city has already allocated $400,000 for the project. Mayor Bobby Wagner told NewsChannel 7 that the grant will help cover amenities such as shaded areas and bathrooms at the courts.
“These courts are just one piece of our overall plan to bring more activities to Destin,” Wagner said. “We want to use these facilities to add walkable infrastructure and bring the community together.”
Wagner expressed hopes that this project would pave the way for future developments, enhancing the community’s connectivity. “What I’m really hoping is that this project leads into many others, showing off how we can get from park to place to path to sidewalks, and really integrating everything together so you feel like you’re in a community,” he said.
The new pickleball courts will be located off Indian Bayou Trail near the dog park. The city aims to break ground within the next few months and complete the courts by early 2025.
