Tuscaloosa County Commissioners are backing a plan to bring more activities to some recreational centers in the county. The Tuscaloosa County Commission agreed to a partnership with the City of Tuscaloosa to put money and/or county resources into building pickleball courts at some Tuscaloosa-area recreation centers. Their support also comes at the request of the Tuscaloosa County Park and Recreation Authority (PARA). The commission approved spending up to $200,000 towards building 11 pickleball courts. That could be spent in either road and bridge work for each project or in direct cash payments.
Eight pickleball courts would be built adjacent to the Buddy Powell Pavilion and three at the Bobby Miller Center.
“We’re looking at doing either some in kind work, site prep on the initial rough grade work, that’s one option. Or just using county funds depending on how the bids come in,” said Tuscaloosa County Commissioner Stan Acker. “This is an opportunity for us to partner with the city for something that will benefit residents all over.”
Acker believes some work on the pickleball courts could start around the first of the new year.
