Despite a two-hour delay because of wet courts, the Bethlehem Pickleball Tournament on Oct. 5 was an incredible success. We had 150 players, 78 teams, played 195 games and awarded 78 medals. The event raised more than $23,000. The proceeds will help support the Bethlehem Senior Services department and bring vital services to the town’s older adults.
“We’re excited to share that we’ve already been approved for a grant to purchase a brand-new van, and thanks to the funds raised at the tournament, we’re getting closer to meeting the matching amount required,” said Leslie Horn Trosset, president of Bethlehem Senior Projects, Inc. “This van will enable volunteers to drive seniors—who can no longer safely drive themselves—to medical appointments, grocery stores, and social and educational programs. Your support is helping us fight the growing isolation crisis that can lead to serious health issues in older adults. Thank you for getting us closer to our goal!”
Leslie added: “Many thanks to Cathleen Crowley Denbeaux and the outstanding Pickleball518 community for supporting our efforts to keep older adults healthy, engaged, and living their best years.”
A great part of the financial success for the tournament is because of the generous support from the tournament’s sponsors: The PlugPV Giacone Solar Sisters, Top Course Masonry, Downsizing with Nina Sher from the Albany Realty Group, Scott Bendett from State Assembly, The Rotary Club of Delmar, Harris Beach Murtha, Meliora Law, Chloe Pierce for NYS Assembly, Grace Roofing, The Spinney at Van Dyke, McSharry & Associates Realty, Kelly’s Pharmacy, Coffey Law PLLC, and Community Bank.
Once the courts dried, the games started moving and we made up time. We awarded the last medals as the sun was setting. I’d like to give a big thanks to all the Bethlehem Senior Project volunteers and Pickleball518 volunteers who helped make this event a success. We could not have done it without you.
